How to Store Spices to Keep Their Flavor Fresh Longer
Many households invest in high-quality spices only to store them incorrectly, losing their rich flavor and potency without even realizing it.
The golden rule of spice storage is to keep them away from direct light and heat. That means keeping them far from the stovetop, oven, or a sunny windowsill, as heat and light quickly break down the volatile essential oils responsible for their flavor and aroma.
Opt for airtight glass jars instead of cardboard packaging or flimsy plastic bags. Glass creates a reliable seal that protects your spices from air and humidity.
Ground spices lose their punch much faster than whole spices. Whenever possible, buy whole seeds—such as cardamom, cumin, and coriander—and grind them as needed; you will notice an incredible boost in freshness and aroma.
As a general rule, ground spices remain at their peak for about one year, while properly stored whole spices can last up to three years. Consider labeling each jar with its purchase date so you can easily track its freshness.
