How to Tell If Meat Is Fresh Before Buying
Choosing fresh meat is one of the most critical steps that determine the quality of your dish once cooked, and there are simple signs you can easily rely on.
Color is the first key indicator. Fresh beef ranges from bright cherry red to deep dark red. If you notice a brownish or grayish tint, that is a sign it is starting to deteriorate or is old.
Smell is also crucial. Fresh meat has a very mild scent or virtually none at all. If you detect a sour, pungent, or foul odor, steer clear of it immediately.
Texture makes a big difference as well. When you press fresh meat, it should feel firm and spring back quickly. If it feels slimy, sticky, or unusually mushy, that is a definite red flag.
When it comes to chicken, ensure the skin has an even color and a smooth texture without dark spots or bruising. The fat should be pale yellow or white, never dark yellow.
The best advice overall is to buy your meat from a trusted, reputable butcher and ask about the slaughter or delivery date whenever possible.
